A fellow of Musikerwohnhaus and the Banff Centre, he completed residencies in Switzerland and Canada, and in 2024, performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival. He received the Tishman Center sustainability award for his project La Tierra, una criatura. Trabajamos juntos en la huerta, hicimos paseos, contemplamos algunas de las más hermosas puestas de sol que vi alguna vez, me organizaron conciertos. Allí surgió la idea de grabar un álbum y tan sólo unos pocos meses más tarde volví para realizar esa idea junto a Pablo Méndez y Ariel Schlichter. El álbum se llamaría Unterwegs, una palabra alemana que quiere decir “En el camino”. Regresaba al país luego de siete meses de viaje, que parecían muchos más. Jan se rió de mí al ver la enorme valija que llevaba. “¿Así viajás, tan pesado? Nosotros siempre viajamos con mochila”. Finales del año 2018 y comienzos del 2019. Un sitio en el que hice buenos amigos, escribí una serie de haikus reunida bajo el titulo ‘Haikus del Guide Del Cervino’ (inédito) y conocí la belleza incomparable de las alturas de hielo y nieve. Pero este lugar fue también el lugar donde experimenté, como nunca antes, la crudeza de la indiferencia y el desinterés humanos. Un punto de inflexión en mi viaje y en mi vida. “Desde que o Samba é Samba”, primer tema de Unterwegs, es una canción de Caetano Veloso, compuesta en el año 1993. Tal vez sea la canción que mejor resume el espíritu del álbum. Era mi primer día en Europa, camino al refugio de montaña Reintalangerhütte, en los Álpes Bávaros, Alemania. “Y hubo música también. Resulta que a los bávaros les encanta la música. El viajar sin dinero es sin dudas interesante. He recorrido ciudades enteras a pie, sin un destino específico y descubriendo las atracciones turística por casualidad. Disfruté de plantear caminos caprichosos rumbo a algún punto aleatorio, probablemente un supermercado barato que estuviera lo más distante posible de mi hospedaje, con la intención de conocer así la ciudad real. Fue de este modo como, por ejemplo, meses más tarde, llevaba semanas en Barcelona cuando, de casualidad, me encontré con la Sagrada Familia, de noche; hasta ese momento, me había imaginado siempre a la famosa construcción de Gaudí rodeada de árboles y prados en un monte y no como en verdad la encontré, rodeada de luces y edificios de departamentos en el medio de la ciudad. Esta sería tan profundamente transformadora que me llevaría incluso a la decisión de abandonar la Argentina con rumbos inciertos, sin un plan y sin demasiado dinero, en la búsqueda de posibilidades para desarrollar mis sueños de música y poesía. “Respecto a la grabación, este es el tema que mejor describe la sensación que dominó la creación de Unterwegs. Canté esta canción por primera vez en el 2018, en el último día como Artista en Residencia en Banff Centre, invitado por Barnaby Benett que decía que había algo en mí y en mi música que le recordaba mucho a Tropicália y Caetano Veloso. Filmé dos canciones en una especie de mar de margaritas florecidas para el canal local de Eschede, el pueblo más grande cerca de Rebberlah. Cuando fui a registrar mi domicilio allí, la mujer que me atendió me miró y me dijo “ah, sí, ya te conozco, te vi en la tele”. “Dos Gardenias” es una canción de Isolina Carrillo, compuesta en 1945 y es una de las canciones más famosas y versionadas de todo el repertorio cubano. Esta foto coincide con el exacto momento en que pensé uno de mis Haikus del Guide Del Cervino: Después de tantos días arrivare presto al paese e vedere el paisaje luminoso. “Lágrimas negras” es una canción compuesta por Miguel Matamoros en 1930. Por supuesto, aprendí esta canción también por sugerencia de Jan para su ciclo de cine hispano. El paisaje de Los Alpes visto desde las alturas, desde un refugio sobre un glaciar a 3.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar, semejante demostración de belleza —que sólo se me ocurre describir como una belleza violenta—, es sencillamente inolvidable. Mi versión de “El día que me quieras” para Unterwegs fue grabada en vivo en el estudio. Esta es, quizás, una de las canciones más desafiantes que alguna vez canté, no sólo por haber sido interpretada magistralmente por su mismo autor, Carlos Gardel, si no por ser una de las canciones más hermosas jamás escritas. We worked together in the orchard, did walks, contemplated some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen, and they organized concerts for me. The whole idea of making an album was born there, and where I returned after just a few months to record it, joined by Pablo Méndez and Ariel Schlichter. The album would be called Unterwegs, a German word that means "On the road." Traveling without money is for sure interesting. I have walked through entire cities, without a specific destination and discovering the touristic attractions by chance. I enjoyed coming up with capricious tours towards some random point, probably a cheap supermarket as far from my lodging as possible, with the intention of knowing the real city. I filmed two songs in a sort of sea of blooming daisies for the local channel of Eschede, the biggest town near Rebberlah. When I went to register my address, the woman that worked there told me “oh yes, I know who you are, I saw you on television”. “Dos Gardenias” is a song by Isolina Carrillo, written in 1945 and one of the most famous songs in the Cuban repertoire. The landscape of the Alps as seen from the heights, from a mountain cottage over a glacier at 3.500 meters above sea level, such a display of beauty —which I can only describe as a violent beauty— is simply unforgettable. My version of “El día que me quieras” was recorded live in the studio. This is, perchance, one of the most challenging songs I have ever performed, not only because it was so marvellously interpreted in its original recording by his author Carlos Gardel himself, but because it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
